ABOUT THE FLICK
Three underpaid employees sweep up stale popcorn in a run-down movie house called The Flick, one of the last theaters in Massachusetts still projecting 35mm films. For Avery, this isn’t a dead-end job, it’s a way to get closer to the art form he loves. Passionate debates about cinema lead to a friendship of sorts with co-workers Sam and Rose. But will their tentative bond survive as they reveal what they actually need from each other? The Flick is a heartfelt cry for the kind of authentic connection we all want, even if we’re a little afraid of it.
AVAILABLE ROLES
Theatre Charlotte is seeking a cast that can bring this slice of life play to the stage in a way that feels more lived in than acted out. The roles and descriptions listed below are intentional and reflect the characters written by the playwright. Ages listed are ages of the characters to be played not necessarily the age of the performer. Some roles may be double cast.
The dialogue spoken by the characters in this play includes profanity, derogatory slang and explicit sexual references.
Please review character descriptions closely before auditioning.
AVERY | male-presenting, 18-22, African American.
Avery is in love with the movies and maybe nothing else. He’s experiencing major depression throughout the duration of the play, sometimes masking and sometimes letting slip the mask.
Intimacy Note: Avery requires on-stage intimacy in the form of simulated sexual touching (hidden from audience view) with the actor playing Rose.
SAM | male-presenting, early 30s, Caucasian.
Sam wears a Red Sox ball cap every day and maybe speaks with a little bit of a Massachusett’s accent. The Flick is his dead-end job and he knows it.
ROSE | female presenting, mid-20s, any race except African American.
The projectionist at The Flick, Rose has a sexual magnetism that comes from her devil-may-care attitude and casual, comfortable, and cool presentation.
Intimacy Note: Rose requires on-stage intimacy in the form of simulated sexual touching (hidden from audience view) with the actor playing Avery.
ADDITIONAL ROLES
2 other single-scene roles may be played by another actor or by an understudy/alternate for the main roles.
