GOD OF CARNAGE

A comedy of manners…without the manners. Winner of the 2009 Tony Award®, God of Carnage is a brash and hilarious exploration of human nature. After one 11-year-old is hit by another, their parents meet to find a mature resolution. As the evening wears on, their attempt at a civilized discussion quickly devolves into finger-pointing, name-calling, stomping around and throwing things. And that’s before they break out the rum! What begins as protective parenting ends as an excuse to let loose the primordial beast buried in each of us. This dark comedy reminds us of how close we are to crossing a line, and how ridiculous it looks when we do.

After the performance, we’ll be joined by Juliet Kuehnle, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, global speaker, and author who works to normalize conversations around mental health. She’ll lead a discussion about parenting and conflict resolution — and how to avoid ending up in a situation like the parents in God of Carnage.

Interview with our director for God of Carnage, Brian Lafontaine

TC: Describe God of Carnage in 3 words or less.
BL: CIVILIZED CHAOS

TC: Welcome back! What shows have you been involved in at Theatre Charlotte recently?
BL: Most recently, I was the Assistant Director for The Play That Goes Wrong. My last appearance on the TC stage was as Oscar Madison in TC's production of The Odd Couple.

TC: What about this show makes you excited to direct it?
BL: I'm really looking forward to directing God of Carnage this season. It's a fantastic show. 4 people. One location. No intermission. Flip the "On" switch and let the mayhem take off and see who's left standing by the end. I'm very familiar with the show. I was fortunate enough to see the original Tony Award Winning Broadway production when I was living in NY, and I had the great pleasure of being in a production in 2013. This show is a workout, and worth every moment.
