Interview with Kyle J. Britt, director for BKLYN
TC: Pitch this show to a first-time theatre patron in one sentence
KB: A modern rock musical fairytale with soaring vocals and a huge heart.
TC: Welcome back! What shows have you been involved in at Theatre Charlotte recently?
KB: I've directed The Flick (2026) and A Christmas Carol (2024), and you might have seen me on stage as Man in Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone (2024), the Lion in The Wizard of Oz (2023), and The Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol (2022). I'm also TC's resident photographer.
TC: What made you say yes to directing this show?
KB: BKLYN is one of my favorite musicals. It's highly underdone with an incredible score and a really beautiful story. I'm excited to see some local actors bring it to life!
TC: Without giving anything away, what's one moment you can't wait for audiences to experience?
KB: No fairytale is complete without a little magic and we've got some magic planned that will hopefully surprise you.
TC: What do you think will surprise audiences most?
KB: In a world flush with Disney-esque fairytales, it's really unique to see one done in a fresh way, with a different take on the usual fairytale archetypes.
TC: Why do you think this is the right story for audiences today?
KB: BKYLN deals with ideas of fame and celebrity, immigration and racism, and veterans and poverty in a way that feels somehow more needed today than it was when BKLYN came out in 2005.
TC: Other than this one, what show are you most looking forward to in Season 99?
KB: Come From Away is the obvious answer, but I'm reallllly excited to see the team does with Frankenstein!
