ABOUT LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
Little Shop of Horrors is the man-eating, award-winning, hilarious mashup of science fiction, horror, and musical theatre. This nostalgic classic blends Motown and rock-n-roll to tell the story of meek floral assistant Seymour on his quest to win the attention of his true love – even if it costs him a little blood! Throw in a sadistic dentist, a hard-to-please boss, and a chorus of all-knowing skid row onlookers and enjoy a taste of the funniest – and hungriest – musical in town!
AVAILABLE ROLES
Theatre Charlotte is looking for a cast that reflects the diverse population of the Charlotte region. Unless specifically stated, roles are open to all ethnicities. Ages listed are ages of the characters to be played not necessarily the age of the performer. Some roles may be double cast.
SEYMOUR
Male presenting, mid 20's to early 30’s
He is a sympathetic underdog whose desperation and desire for acceptance lead him down a dark and tragic path. He is shy, socially clumsy, and often lacks confidence. Seymour has a good heart and wants to do the right thing, but he’s easily swayed by promises of success and love.
Intimacy note - character will embrace Audrey and may share a stage kiss, will also share father/son affection with the character of Mushnik.
AUDREY
Female presenting, mid 20's to early 30’s
She is sweet and gentle. Audrey puts others before herself. She is insecure and has low self-worth which is reflected through her abusive relationship. Despite her hardships, she clings to the hope of a quiet, ideal life. She is grounded and full of emotional intelligence.
Intimacy note - character will embrace Seymour and may share a stage kiss with him, will receive acts of abuse from character of Orin which may include a slap across the face, nonreciprocal kissing and touching.
CRYSTAL, RONNETTE, AND CHIFFON
Black, Female presenting, late teens to mid 30s
Greek chorus-style story tellers and singers. They are an homage to Motown music and black female music groups of the 1960’s. This trio is charismatic and fun! They are Urchins with sharp wit, street-smart attitude, and bold energy. They tease, joke, and often comment directly to the audience. Must be able to harmonize with ease, be a dynamic dancer and overall engaging presence on stage.
MUSHNIK
Male presenting, 50's - 60's
The boss. Flawed but entertaining character who adds both conflict and humor to the story, often serving as a contrast to Seymour’s timid nature. Mushnik is a practical, no-nonsense business person who often complains and frets about the shop’s poor sales. He can be short-tempered and domineering, especially toward Seymour, but deep down, he is not without concern for his employees.
Intimacy note – Will share father/son affection with Seymour.
ORIN
Male presenting, 25 – mid 40s
A tall, dark and handsome dentist. Commands attention with swagger and showmanship. He is all about self ego. Gets pleasure from causing pain, both professionally and personally. Orin uses intimidation and fear to dominate Audrey. The same actor plays up to 8 various roles throughout the show. These roles require comic energy in mind, matching the vaudevillian tone of Orin.
Intimacy note – will initiate acts of abuse towards the character of Audrey, which may include a slap to the face and nonreciprocal kissing and touching.
AUDREY TWO
Any gender identity, 20s - 50s
Villain; a mysterious, talking, man-eating plant. Audrey II oozes charm and coolness, using slick talk and music to manipulate Seymour. Strong ability to be persuasive. Can exploit others’ weaknesses. Speaks and sings with authority, demanding attention and obedience. Sinister and power hungry. Beneath the charm lies a ruthless, predatory being bent on domination and destruction. Nobody's friend.
Note: Audrey Two is typically voiced by an off-stage performer while a puppeteer handles the plant’s physical movement, however, Theatre Charlotte is interested in casting a charismatic performer with stage presence who may make an onstage appearance complementing the plant puppet. In other words, show us what you’ve got!
The Plant/Puppeteers
Any gender identity, age 17 and up
Operates the physical movements of the man-eating plant, Audrey Two, from small pot to massive monster. This requires a highly physical performer or puppeteer. The individual works closely with the voice actor to match energy, timing, and emotion. Brings the plant to life with personality — even small movements (nods, lunges, leans) convey intent and mood. Must understand comedic beats and dramatic tension, hitting cues cleanly with charm or menace.
The Puppeteer needs strength and stamina. Operating the larger puppets (especially Audrey II Pods III and IV) requires upper-body strength and long periods in confined, hot spaces. The use of hands, arms, shoulders and at times the entire torso, to animate the plant’s mouth, vines, and body. Puppeteers may be double cast and serve in the ensemble or as understudies. There are also non-singing roles for puppeteers.
Note: Additional performers may be cast as an extension of Audrey Two to provide additional movement through dance and choreography. Think plant vines and appendages.
