HISTORY
1927-2009
82 Years of Excellence
With
a production history dating from 1927, Theatre Charlotte is Charlotte's
oldest arts organization as well as the oldest continually producing
theatre in the state. As a non-professional venue, this theatre is
heavily dependent upon community support from the Metrolina area and the
talents of our volunteer force. During the past 78 years these factors
have combined to create a reputation for excellence unrivalled in the
Southeast.
In 1927, the Charlotte branch of the American Association of University
Women decided to study the Little Theatre movement. This grassroots
effort to mount amateur theatricals swept the country during and after
the First World War.
That group
performed it's first production in 1928, a reading of "Outward Bound",
in the Carnegie Library downtown. Since 1941, the theatre has been
housed at 501 Queens Road, located in the heart of the historic Myers
Park district of Charlotte.
With over 2600
performances of 420 mainstage productions, an annual participation of
approximately 500 volunteers, and education outreach programs that serve
the schools and the community at large, we are your community theatre!
