Do you know how long Theatre Charlotte has been presenting high-quality local theatre? This season, Theatre Charlotte will celebrate 85 years of producing the very best in theatre for the people of the Charlotte region. And the generosity of people like you has helped make this possible!
Without a doubt, we have a lot to celebrate! The theatre’s history has included over 450 main stage productions, seen by over half a million theatre-goers and utilizing the services of thousands of volunteers onstage, backstage, and front of house. Theatre Charlotte has changed the lives of young people experiencing the wonders of theatre for the first time and provided the first theatre opportunity for many who have gone on to work in theatres throughout our area. This past season alone has brought some major accomplishments. Theatre Charlotte was named Theatre Company of the Year by the Metrolina Theatre Association and recognized with nine other awards! Our stage saw a total of 227 actors participating in main stage shows and special events as well as 137 folks working behind the scenes on production teams, backstage crew and set building, and a countless number of volunteers serving as ushers and concessions workers. We welcomed 42 new actors to our stage and showcased the work of 11 new directors and designers during our Main Stage shows. Our Student Theatre Guild held their second summer intensive for teens and college students culminating in three sold out performances of the musical Cabaret. The cast of The Music Man was invited to be a part of the Wells Fargo Community Day Celebration, singing songs from the show and welcoming the iconic stagecoach with the song “The Wells Fargo Wagon.” Our cast of A Christmas Carol was a part of the hit TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, performing during a fundraiser for the home built in Lincoln County.
While we celebrate our rich heritage, we have our eyes firmly set on the future. We are excited about our 85th season that will include productions of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Foreigner, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, our 6th annual production of A Christmas Carol and the regional premieres of In the Heat of the Night and Avenue Q. Our performance series, just do it, returns for its sixth season giving writers, performers, and artists an opportunity to create new works and share them with an audience. July will see the third Student Theatre Guild summer intensive, culminating in three performances of the musical Pippin. Also in July, we will introduce TCjr, a three week program for students ages 9-14. The youngsters will work with professional directors, choreographers, designers, technicians and performers in the creation of a production of Beauty and the Beast, Jr. for seven performances. We are thrilled that more than 75 students will be involved in these two summer programs!
Theatre Charlotte is able to celebrate 85 years of providing theatre opportunities, youth programs and outstanding entertainment at affordable prices because of the generosity of our donors. Donations enable us to attract professional directors and designers to work with our volunteers in creating quality productions. Donations help us pay for production royalties so we can do the shows that our community wants to see. In fact, donations cover half of Theatre Charlotte’s expenses from scenery to playbills, volunteer meals to insurance, and everything in between.
On behalf of Theatre Charlotte’s Board of Directors, we respectfully ask you to support us by making a donation to our Annual Fund Campaign. A gift of any size makes a difference.
