Auditions at Theatre Charlotte

Anyone interested in performing on stage at Theatre Charlotte is welcome to audition.  For musicals, generally you will be required to prepare a song and bring the sheet music to the audition and come dressed to move.  For non-musicals you will most likely be asked to read scenes from the script.  Perusal copies of scripts are often available for those interested in auditioning.  Rehearsals are usually held Sunday through Thursday evenings.

The audition dates for the 2011-2012 season are:

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE
Sunday, March 18 and Monday, March 19 at 7 pm
Directed by Dennis Delamar
Choreography by Linda Booth
Music Direction by Ryan Deal

Auditions:
7 pm
    Sunday, March 18
7 pm
    Monday, March 19

Callbacks: 7 pm    Tuesday, March 20

Seeking:
5 men, 4 women (several of the actors double in “adult” roles)
Age 18 to early 30s for spellers; late 20s to 50 for “adults”
(We are going with the original concept of the show using older actors portraying younger characters, so you must be at least 18 to audition.  This is not a teen production.  See individual character breakdown for age ranges.)

Casting for:

Spellers:

CHIP TOLENTINO (also plays JESUS).  relatively athletic and social, he expects things to come easily to him.  Lately though, he’s been going through some weird changes, and things are slipping out of his control.  AGE 18 to 30s.  (Sings a lot of high notes, a lot of times—vocal range:  C3-B4 tenor)

LOGAINNE SCHWARTZANDGRUBENNIEREYounger than most bee participants, she is driven by internal and external pressure—but above all by a desire to win to make her two fathers (from whom she takes her combined last name) proud.  She lisps, is a little uncomfortable in her body, has some tics, but still manages to strike a strong presence with her political awareness and keen sense of justice.  AGE 18 to 30s.  (vocal range: C4-D5 soprano)

LEAF CONEYBEAR (also plays Carl Grubenierre, one of Logainne’s dads).  A second alternate,  he never expected to compete here today.  Home-schooled with his many siblings, everything about this public event is an adventure for him  He may have severe Attention Deficit Disorder but delights in his own wandering focus.  He finds absolutely everything incredibly amusing.  His Mother has made him wear his protective helmet to the bee.  AGE:  18-30s) (vocal range:  A2-G4 bari tenor).

WILLIAM BARFEEHas a host of health problems and a lot to prove.  Loud and combative as a defensive posture, he is the fat kid who becomes a bully to avoid being picked on.  Friendship takes him by surprise.  He’s noticed on the spelling circuit for his remarkable technique—spelling words out on the floor with his foot.  Taken out of competition last year because of an ill-timed allergic reaction, he’s here for vindication.  AGE 18 to 30s.  (Vocal range:  Eb3-Bb4 tenor).

MARCY PARKThe ultimate over-achiever.  Marcy has never been given another option.  She comes from a family where excellence is expected. A parochial school student, she assumes God, too, expects perfection.  Having moved often because of her parents’ work, she knows she can beat the local competition.  Her many talents include piano, dance, martial arts, baton twirling and other special gifts that the actress playing this role may possess.  AGE 18 to 30s.  (Vocal range:  B3-E5 soprano/mezzo-soprano)

OLIVE OSTROWVSKY.  Loves words and has a fairly quiet life.  An only child with often absent parents, she spends a lot of time alone.  Spends a lot of time reading the dictionary, with words bringing her comfort.  She starts enormously shy and shyly blossoms.  AGE 18 to 30s (vocal range: strong belter B3-F#5 soprano)

Adults:

RONA LISA PERRETTI (also plays Olive’s Mom in fantasyLong-time spelling bee hostess, a local realtor and 3rd annual Putnam County spelling champion.  This is her day to be queen.  She keeps the bee running smoothly, upholds protocol and conveys crucial information to the audience.  She is totally dedicated to the success of the bee.  Concerned when the substitute word pronouncer arrives, she knows she has to step up her game.  AGE late 20s to 50 (vocal range:  C#4-Ab5, strong soprano)

VICE PRINCIPAL DOUGLAS PANCH of Lake Hemingway Dos Passos Junior HS, is frustrated with his life.  He fell into education not out of passion.  The drive of the young spellers is alien to him as he never found anything that important.  Endlessly awaits a promotion that isn’t coming.  Not happy about getting the call to substitute, nonetheless he is eager to do well to redeem himself for past mistakes and to impress Rona Lisa, who impressed him long ago.  AGE 30 to 50.  (non singing role—dry, actor good with improv.)

MITCH MAHONEY (also plays Dan Schwartz, Logainne’s other Dad, as well as Olive’s Dad). With a bouncer’s physique and demeanor, Mitch appears an odd choice to be the bee’s “comfort counselor,” but it’s part of his community service assignment.  An outsider, he wonders about the wisdom of putting the kids through it all.  He has no idea how to offer comfort, but begins to wish he could find a way to make them feel better about losing.  AGE 20s to 40s (vocal range:  E3-A4 (B4) strong tenor)
