A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM

Musical
Book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Based on the plays of Plautus
Directed by Vito Abate

"Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone: a comedy tonight!" Broadway's greatest farce is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written. A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000 year old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. In this non-stop laugh-fest, Pseudolus, a crafty slave, struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan named Philia, for his young master, Hero, in exchange for freedom. The plot twists and turns with cases of mistaken identity, slamming doors, and a showgirl or two.

PLEASE NOTE... A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum has replaced the previously announced production of Fiddler on the Roof. Due to circumstances beyond our control, Theatre Charlotte is not able to produce Fiddler on the Roof as the opening musical for our 2012-2013 Season. We understand that many of you were excited to see this show – we were too! We sincerely apologize for this disappointing news, but we do hope to be able to bring Fiddler on the Roof to our stage in the coming years. In its place, we will be producing A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. This Tony Award winning musical has been called one of the funniest musicals ever written and features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart.

No one is more disappointed than our production team for Fiddler on the Roof who has already put in many hours and much hard work, but everyone is on board to make A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum a memorable opener for our 85th season!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR STAR SEASON TICKET HOLDERS
Star Season ticket holders will receive replacement tickets within the next three weeks. When you receive these tickets in the mail, please destroy your Fiddler on the Roof tickets as they will now be invalid. If you wish to exchange your tickets to this show for extra tickets to any of our other shows this season, we will be happy to assist you. Please call the Theatre Charlotte box office weekdays between the hours of 10:00am and 4:00pm at 704-376-3777 to make exchanges or for any other questions or concerns.

THE FOREIGNER

Comedy
By Larry Shue
Directed by Paige Johnston Thomas

In Larry Shue’s hilarious farce, Charlie Baker, a proof reader by day and a boring husband by night, adopts the persona of a foreigner who doesn’t understand English. WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?

Drama
By Edward Albee

A dark comedy, it portrays husband and wife George and Martha in a searing night of dangerous fun and games. By the evening's end, a stunning revelation provides a climax that has shocked audiences for years. With the play's razor-sharp dialogue and the stripping away of social pretense, Newsweek keenly foresaw Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? as "a brilliantly original work of art-an excoriating theatrical experience, surging with shocks of recognition and dramatic fire…."

HOLIDAY PRODUCTION

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Classic Tale
Adapted by John Jakes from the novel by Charles Dickens
Directed by Kevin Campbell

Theatre Charlotte’s holiday tradition is back for the sixth consecutive year! This version captures the mage and mystique of the Dickens original. At the opening, Charles Dickens is presenting a reading of his popular “A Christmas Carol.” As he begins, the story unfolds on stage around him: the classic tale of hard-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge who is visited by the ghost of his late partner, Jacob Marley and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. These spirits gradually warm old Scrooge’s heart, as well as ours.

For 3 weeks participants will work with professional directors, choreographers, designers, technicians and performers experiencing and creating musical theatre. In addition to these professionals, college students studying the performing arts, along with exceptional high school students, will work alongside these young people, sharing their knowledge and experience, rehearsing and performing a professional-level summer stock production to be presented on the Theatre Charlotte stage.

Student Theatre Guild presents
PIPPIN

July 20-22, 2012

Book by Roger O. Hirson
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
(ages 14 through college)
Directed by Jamey Varnadore

Once upon a time, a young prince longed to discover the secret of true happiness and fulfillment. He sought it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father King Charlemagne the Great). In the end, he found it in the simple pleasures of home and family.

The Student Theatre Guild offers an intensive two-week camp, culminating in a student-produced and performed production on the main stage of Theatre Charlotte. Last year's production of "Cabaret" played to sell-out audiences and received high praise. This summer's production will be PIPPIN. The summer intensive rehearsals will be held July 8-18 (weekdays only) from 1 pm to 8 pm. Performances will be July 20-22.
